What is a Time Clock

A time clock is anything that records the start and end times of an employee's shift.

That can include a machine, software, terminals, app, or even a pen and paper. Each type has their own pros and cons.

The whole purpose of a time clock is to record how long someone works for payroll... Nothing more complicated than that.

Types of time clocks

• With time clock machines, most print on paper time cards, while some might total the hours for you.

• With time clock software, most provide a way for employees to click a button to register their time.

• With time clock terminals, employees typically enter a PIN, wave a badge, place a finger, or face a camera.

• With time clock apps, employees use their phones or tablets by tapping a button, or facing a camera.

• With pen and paper, employees write it down.
